The Red Door Resort Ice Roads

Mille Lacs Ice Report 2/9/2023

Ice Roads Open to Full Traffic with Good Access to the Mud Flats

The Red Door Resort ice roads continue to be open to full traffic for the weekend of Thursday, February 9th to Sunday, February 12th.  The ice road network covers the first and second sand breaks, and the mud flats, including Weimer, Bomback, Pantry, Barnacle, and Resort flats (see map below).  A video ice update is included below.

The temperatures have been warm and, with the above freezing weather, the snow has settled down on the lake and the melted snow is pooling, causing some surface flooding.  With those conditions in mind, the resort will be allowing 40 public wheelhouses out this weekend.  Please note that reservations are required for wheelhouse traffic and reservations for the any upcoming weekend can be made here: https://thereddoorresort.com/wheelhouse-weekend-reservations/.   Vehicle-only, side by side, ATV, snowmobile and walk-outs traffic are all still welcome and require no reservation.

The bite on the north side of Mille Lacs was very quiet during the cold front that ended just prior to last weekend.  Fortunately things have improved with the warmer temperatures and anglers are catching fish on both the sand breaks and off the mud flats. The fish aren’t jumping out of the holes or snapping at just any presentation so, if you can, the best strategy is to be mobile while fishing or to put out some tips up at varying depths outside of the fish house rental or wheelhouse.

We look forward to seeing you on the north side of Mille Lacs during one of these last three weekends of the hard water season. The Red Door Resort have fish house rental availability and wheelhouse reservations are open for both future weekends.

Activities at Red Door

The Red Door Resort offers a number of activities at or near the resort. Our swimming beach has a sandy lake bottom that stretches out from shore. Activities available at the main resort include a playground, basketball, and gaga ball pit.

Mille Lacs Lake features a world renowned fishery and is also great for recreational use, including swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, wind surfing, kayaking and canoeing. Off the lake there are walking, hiking and snowmobiling opportunities; many of the trails wind through hundreds of acres of beautiful state land and are accessible year round. The area around the resort has a high concentration of sugar maples, which means that, in the fall, the area has some of the most vibrant colors in the state.

The resort is only minutes away from excellent hunting land, state parks, and golf courses. Further afield, you can access the Grand Casino Mille Lacs, Brainerd International Raceway, Paul Bunyan Land, Wealthwood Rod and Gun Club, and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum.
