New Mille Lacs ice roads to Barnacle Flat and the Bumps

Mille Lacs Ice Report 2/1/2023

Beautiful Ice Roads to the Mud Flats

The Red Door Resort ice roads are in good shape and open to full traffic for the weekend of Thursday, February 2nd to Sunday, February 5th.  The ice road network covers the first and second sand breaks, and the mud flats, including Weimer, Bomback, Pantry – and new this week – Resort and Barnacle flats.  The cover image for this blog shows the current Red Door ice roads.

With the expanded road network, the resort will be allowing 50 public wheelhouses out this weekend.  Please note that reservations are required for wheelhouse traffic and reservations for the any upcoming weekend can be made here: https://thereddoorresort.com/wheelhouse-weekend-reservations/.   Vehicle-only, side by side, ATV, snowmobile and walk-outs traffic are all still welcome and require no reservation.

Weather Outlook

The week long cold snap is expected to continue through Friday before temperatures rise into the 20’s by mid-afternoon on Saturday and stay warm for the ensuing week.  The Ice Team is please to see that the 10 day forecast shows only limited precipitation predicted with a dusting of snow expected on Monday, February 6th.  Winds will be a sustained 15 mph, with gusts in the mid-20 mph, out of the south overnight Friday and into early Saturday.  Saturday and Sunday the wind should settle down, so the weekend proper is expected to be relatively warm and calm.

Fishing Report

During last week’s cold front the bite slowed down signifiantly on both the north end sand breaks and the mud flats.  Those anglers fishing in a house with tip-ups or portably saw the most action.

Mark Schutz was out on the mud flats this last weekend and provided a fishing report.  Anglers on mud flats were doing ok.  The most successful efforts were with dead sticks with live bait (i.e., a shiner, fat head, sucker minnow), small weight and simple hook.  Mark recommends trying different color hooks including chartreuse, purple, and even orange.
