Get Ready, Get Set, Go! Countdown to Summer at The Red Door Resort

One of the best parts of this time of year is the anticipation of something great right around the corner. A build-up-to-the-ball-drop-in-Times-Square moment, or the dramatic lift-off sequence before a rocket launches into the sky. For those of us tired of winter and ready for the next great thing, a good old-fashioned countdown to summer starts playing in our heads. “There are only so many sleeps until the sun is yay (one arm up) high in the sky.” “In just X amount of days, my grillmaster apron will become my most worn accessory.” So, why don’t we do a kick-off sequence of sorts together? Ladies and gentlemen, drum roll please… Let the annual countdown to summer bliss begin (and the crowd goes wild!)

Traditions. Parents love crafting them and families love celebrating them. Why are they so important to establish and nurture? Simply put, they bring loved ones together and create long-lasting memories. The balloons put in your child’s bed for them to wake up to every birthday morning? They’ll stay with them. The matching Santa pajamas laid out every Christmas Eve? They’ll be etched in their minds. The first day of school donut buffet? They won’t forget. Hopefully, these moments of core memory fun find their way down the line, relived with your kids’ kids.

Summer traditions specifically. They’re some of the best because let’s be real, it’s warm and bright and winter funks have exited stage left. You’ll find that most sunny season rituals can be found in the outdoor adventures category: early morning fishing, late afternoon swims, evening bonfires, and delicious picnic table meals around the clock. You’re together, enjoying each other’s company, and soaking up the season you wait for all year.

When you think about Minnesota family getaways, imagine family fishing traditions. As that magical picture forms in your head, consider Lake Mille Lacs fishing as your next yearly family ritual. You’ll never feel more on The *insert your last name* Squad than when together, you glide across a gorgeous body of water and drop anchor on the spot. You’ll connect over baiting your hooks (cue slight grimace) and then join in a hushed cheer (don’t scare the fish!) when a bobber suddenly plummets below the water’s surface. You’ll bond over the triumphs and the troubles. Are you in the figurative ‘fishing for beginners’ boat? No worries! You’ll work together as you learn essential tips for fishing with children and how to make fishing fun for kids and adults alike. As they say, life’s better with a rod in hand.

So, how do you make fishing fun for kids, you ask? And is there a waiting list for appointments with whoever wrote the book on how to teach kids to fish? We can help! Include your kiddos in the planning and preparation. Let them gather bait (cue faint scowl), handle some of the packing, do research beforehand, and have we mentioned snacks? Kids are the best snack list makers. Let them take on the role of official photographer as scaly swimmers are reeled in, in short, let it be a true hands-on experience. The excitement of hooking their first walleye, preparing it for a delicious meal, and enjoying an unforgettable evening fish fry—they’ll remember it all. Are they feeling antsy? Get creative with fishing challenges such as, “Who can catch the first fish?” or “Whose fish is the feistiest?” And again, we can’t emphasize this enough,  DO NOT FORGET THE SNACKS! Goldfish crackers and gummy worms are a must. The key is to keep things light and fun because this venture may be an exercise in patience, but it’s also a rewarding journey in fun and maximum memory-making.

Activities at Red Door

The Red Door Resort offers a number of activities at or near the resort. Our swimming beach has a sandy lake bottom that stretches out from shore. Activities available at the main resort include a playground, basketball, and gaga ball pit.

Mille Lacs Lake features a world renowned fishery and is also great for recreational use, including swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, wind surfing, kayaking and canoeing. Off the lake there are walking, hiking and snowmobiling opportunities; many of the trails wind through hundreds of acres of beautiful state land and are accessible year round. The area around the resort has a high concentration of sugar maples, which means that, in the fall, the area has some of the most vibrant colors in the state.

The resort is only minutes away from excellent hunting land, state parks, and golf courses. Further afield, you can access the Grand Casino Mille Lacs, Brainerd International Raceway, Paul Bunyan Land, Wealthwood Rod and Gun Club, and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum.
