John Wersal

Our preferred fishing guide

The Red Door Resort is excited to present John Wersal as the Resort’s in-house and preferred Mille Lacs Lake fishing guide.

John Wersal was born and raised on the shores of Mille Lacs Lake. He has made the Mille Lacs area home his whole life and has developed a deep passion – and exceptional skill set – for angling on the big pond, where John has logged thousands of hours on the water.

John believes that Mille Lacs provides unmatched fishing opportunities with world class smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike and muskie angling. He is well versed in multiple species and fishing techniques, and is enthusiastic about using the latest technology to stay on the fish.

John takes the time prior to each trip to understand each guest’s expectations for the guided fishing trip and does his best to personalize the trip. In addition to being a successful angler, John prides himself on providing excellent customer service and on working hard to provide a positive and enjoyable experience.

Clients will need to bring current Minnesota fishing license, weather appropriate clothing/rain gear, snacks, beverages and, of course, camera. Clients are welcome to bring their own fishing rods and tackle. Otherwise, rods, tackle, bait and other miscellaneous items will be provided.

John looks forward to hosting you for a guided trip and to sharing a memorable day on the water!

Tim Mathiesen

Prescott Baits and Guide Service

Captain Tim is the proud owner of Prescott Baits and Guide Service. He spends many days on Mille lacs Lake, which he calls “One of the Best Fisheries in the Midwest.” He started fishing Mille lacs in the late 70s and loves to target Giant Smallmouth. Tim prides himself on being a “true multispecies” angler who loves guiding for any species that swims in open water. Whether your interest is walleye, muskies, or something in between, you’re in good hands with Captain Tim, as he has many years of guiding under his belt. He got into guiding to share his years of knowledge, as well as his love of the great outdoors and fishing. Being a true student of the game, he realizes a good guide is instrumental in knowing how to identify the best places to find fish, which tackle works best, and what techniques to use in any given situation because that’s what produces the best results. And last but not least, Captain Tim realizes a good guide is also a good teacher, someone who can instruct and show others how to be more successful, which is a huge benefit for your future outings on the water – guided or unguided and long after the day is done.

Activities at Red Door

The Red Door Resort offers a number of activities at or near the resort. Our swimming beach has a sandy lake bottom that stretches out from shore. Activities available at the main resort include a playground, basketball, and gaga ball pit.

Mille Lacs Lake features a world renowned fishery and is also great for recreational use, including swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, wind surfing, kayaking and canoeing. Off the lake there are walking, hiking and snowmobiling opportunities; many of the trails wind through hundreds of acres of beautiful state land and are accessible year round. The area around the resort has a high concentration of sugar maples, which means that, in the fall, the area has some of the most vibrant colors in the state.

The resort is only minutes away from excellent hunting land, state parks, and golf courses. Further afield, you can access the Grand Casino Mille Lacs, Brainerd International Raceway, Paul Bunyan Land, Wealthwood Rod and Gun Club, and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum.
