Ice Bridge on Mille Lacs Lake

Mille Lacs Ice Report 1/5/2023

Access Open to Walkout, Snowmobile, ATV and Side by Side Traffic

Public ice traffic at The Red Door Resort this weekend will remain limited to walkout, snowmobile, ATV and side by sides.  Individuals with season passes and Red Door Members – those with seasonal spots at the resort – will be allowed to drive up to a half ton or equivalent vehicle onto the lake and tow a single axel wheelhouse.  The access will likely open to public traffic the weekend of January 13th.

The ice is coming along despite the additional 7+ inches of light fluffy snow that fell on the north side of Mille Lacs Lake this week. That said, much of the last week was too warm with highs around 32 degrees, so the decision was made to give the access and ice roads at least another week before allowing an influx of vehicle traffic.  The next seven days are expected to have overnight lows in the single digits and, hopefully, much of the light snow blows away from the north end.

With the exception of the big 10-person houses (The Red Door Resort now has 6 of these!), all fish house rentals are all on the lake and ready for the weekend.  The Ice Team has initial roads plowed along the first second break and second break and has a trunk road out to the mud flats.  The team has not yet plowed off shoot roads to the Weimer, Bomback and Pantry Flats, but it a quick walk or ATV from the trunk road to the edge of the flats.  The snow is fluffy and off road driving is still possible with cautious exploration.

All of us at The Red Door Resort hope your New Year is off to a good start.  We look forward to hosting you on the north side of Mille Lacs Lake.

Activities at Red Door

The Red Door Resort offers a number of activities at or near the resort. Our swimming beach has a sandy lake bottom that stretches out from shore. Activities available at the main resort include a playground, basketball, and gaga ball pit.

Mille Lacs Lake features a world renowned fishery and is also great for recreational use, including swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, wind surfing, kayaking and canoeing. Off the lake there are walking, hiking and snowmobiling opportunities; many of the trails wind through hundreds of acres of beautiful state land and are accessible year round. The area around the resort has a high concentration of sugar maples, which means that, in the fall, the area has some of the most vibrant colors in the state.

The resort is only minutes away from excellent hunting land, state parks, and golf courses. Further afield, you can access the Grand Casino Mille Lacs, Brainerd International Raceway, Paul Bunyan Land, Wealthwood Rod and Gun Club, and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum.
