Late Summer Open Water Minnesota Fishing Season on Lake Mille Lacs

The days are once again getting shorter and anglers are beginning to dust off their ice houses, but that doesn’t mean the open water Minnesota fishing season is over! There is still time to hook up the boat and head for Lake Mille Lacs for some late season open fishing in Minnesota. Snag a few of the state fish and scratch that itch for casting out one last time for the  late summer Minnesota fishing season before the ice comes in.

The Perfect Season for the Minnesota State Fish

Minnesota fishing seasonWhen we head into fall weather in Minnesota, the cooler temperatures make it a prime season for catching the Minnesota state fish: walleye! During the summer months, walleye are typically found in deeper waters near the bottom of the lake. However, cooler temperatures bring them closer to the surface and help create longer periods of active fishing. In the summer, anglers would most often head out in the early hours of the morning and head in as the sun peaks, then return at dusk for a few evening bites. The fall MInnesota fishing season allows walleye to stick around longer into the day and start biting in the earlier afternoon hours as temperatures don’t heat up the water nearly as much as midday during the summer months.

Minnesota fishing seasonBest Aspects of Fall Fishing

One of the best aspects of fall fishing in Minnesota is the comfortable temperatures. Head out in the morning with a light jacket or a sweatshirt and take a layer off as the temperatures rise. You’ll still want to take a bottle of sunscreen with you, but you won’t have to worry about getting too hot on the water. Cool breezes and calm waters are often a highlight for fishing on Mille Lacs in the late summer and early fall. Spend the day casting lines and relaxing with the light bobbing waves for a full day out on the water without worrying about overheating or catching a little too much sun.
