Fall foliage is a statewide highlight for both visitors and locals in Minnesota. Folks will load up the car and drive around just to take in the gorgeous postcard-worthy views of trees boasting bright shades of reds, yellows, and oranges. There’s nothing quite like looking out over a lake to see colorful trees lining the shores and reflecting off the rippling waters on a peaceful autumn day.

When is the best time to “leaf peep” during fall in Minnesota? Well, it varies. The southern portion of the state can sometimes see color into early-mid October, but in the Mille Lacs area, the fall foliage tends to be best between the second week of September and the last week of September. Each year is different because it’s all based on the weather patterns. A really hot August and early September will often delay color changes, but cooler temperatures during the late summer months will end up creating colorful views earlier. The best way to track when and where to find fall colors is by following the Minnesota DNR’s fall color finder report.

One of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the fall colors is to hit the roads. Pack a lunch or find a route with a few fun lunch spots to explore along the way.
