Lake Mille Lacs Ice Roads

Mille Lacs Ice Report 2/18/2021

Full Traffic and Good Ice Conditions for the Penultimate Hard Water Weekend

The Red Door access is in good shape and ice roads are open to full traffic for the upcoming weekend.  Temperatures in the high teens (45 degrees warmer when comparing last Saturday’s low to this one’s predicted high!) and wind speeds around 12 mph should make for a nice weekend on the north end of Lake Mille Lacs.  Please keep your plow at home; off road travel is not too bad and, time allowing, our Ice Team is willing to plow a specific spot for your rig.

Though decent fish were still sporadically caught, the bite was a bit slow the last two weekends.  Now leading up to this weekend, perhaps due to the warming weather or otherwise, we are hearing increasing number of positive fishing reports, which may indicate that the fishing may be picking up.  We continue to recommend the more hands-off fishing techniques (e.g., tip-ups, dead sticks, rattle reels) and, if out on the mud, recommend fishing deeper, in the 27′ to 30′ range during the day and slightly shallower as evening falls.

Our current ice road map is the included as the featured image for post.  The Ice Team has slightly rerouted roads from last weekend and the Red Door Ice roads current reach the following flats:  Wiemer, Bomback, Pantry, Resort (north and south), Matton, Phil’s, Fishhouse, Eileen’s, 8-Mile, Fletcher, Bitcher,  and Backer.  Don’t forget that last weekend we also opened up roads along the first and second break lines.

We have two weekends left before walleye closes on February 28th and the Lower Inland Water Shelter Removal Deadline on March 1st.  Thank you for your loyalty and we look forward to seeing you this weekend.

Activities at Red Door

The Red Door Resort offers a number of activities at or near the resort. Our swimming beach has a sandy lake bottom that stretches out from shore. Activities available at the main resort include a playground, basketball, and gaga ball pit.

Mille Lacs Lake features a world renowned fishery and is also great for recreational use, including swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, wind surfing, kayaking and canoeing. Off the lake there are walking, hiking and snowmobiling opportunities; many of the trails wind through hundreds of acres of beautiful state land and are accessible year round. The area around the resort has a high concentration of sugar maples, which means that, in the fall, the area has some of the most vibrant colors in the state.

The resort is only minutes away from excellent hunting land, state parks, and golf courses. Further afield, you can access the Grand Casino Mille Lacs, Brainerd International Raceway, Paul Bunyan Land, Wealthwood Rod and Gun Club, and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum.
