Mille Lacs Lake Ice Access

Mille Lacs Ice Report 12/22/2022

The Red Door Resort Access is Open to Walk Out, ATV, Snowmobile and Side by Side Traffic

For Christmas weekend, The Red Door Resort Access is open to walk out traffic, ATVs, Snowmobiles and, for the first time, side by sides.  The Ice Team was relishing in the cold weather this week and found ice depths ranged from 8″ to 11″ with the majority indicating 9″ to 10″ of ice.  The Team was pleased to find only a limited number of slush pockets.

The Resort and the north side of Mille Lacs Lake did receive another ~3″ of dry powdery snow this week and the gusting wind blew it around.  Only a few hearty anglers braved the extreme weather and wind chills, so fishing reports were limited.

The weekend forecast continues to look frigid with lows in the negative double digits and highs in the single digits.  The Ice Team will be back on the lake next week measuring ice and making a determination if the Team can start to establish a hard water road system, starting with the north-south trunk road and east/west roads along the sand breaks.

The next Ice Report will be published mid-week and will provide information related to what to expect for New Years weekend.  At this point, the expectation is that the resort will have some of the fish house rentals on the lake. Private houses will likely not be pulled out yet and it’s unlikely that any vehicle and wheelhouse traffic will be permitted.

The Red Door Resort office will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and all of us on the North Side of Mille Lacs Lake wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas!

Activities at Red Door

The Red Door Resort offers a number of activities at or near the resort. Our swimming beach has a sandy lake bottom that stretches out from shore. Activities available at the main resort include a playground, basketball, and gaga ball pit.

Mille Lacs Lake features a world renowned fishery and is also great for recreational use, including swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, wind surfing, kayaking and canoeing. Off the lake there are walking, hiking and snowmobiling opportunities; many of the trails wind through hundreds of acres of beautiful state land and are accessible year round. The area around the resort has a high concentration of sugar maples, which means that, in the fall, the area has some of the most vibrant colors in the state.

The resort is only minutes away from excellent hunting land, state parks, and golf courses. Further afield, you can access the Grand Casino Mille Lacs, Brainerd International Raceway, Paul Bunyan Land, Wealthwood Rod and Gun Club, and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum.
